NEW!!!! NEKO CASE

So it is the end of the week... and to kick off the weekend I bring you NEW Neko Case!

Yesterday, Thursday, November 17, Neko Case was in-studio for WNYC's Soundcheck.  She performed new songs, At Last, and the title track off of her new record The Fox Confessor Brings The Flood, which will be released on March 7, 2006.   

The gorgeous red-head of New Pornographers and solo fame, gives more great music! Here You Go!

Cloud Cult

Hailing from Minneapolis,MN, Cloud Cult began as a solo project of Craig Minowa in the early 90's and ten years later now includes a full band, live painters at shows and performance artist.  Musically Combine The Dismemberment Plan's Travis Morrison's vocals (Change era) with a little old-school Modest Mouse, throw in a cello, piano, synth and maybe the kitchen sink? and you'll have the best description of Cloud Cult I can give.

Okkervil River with Charles Bissell and Audible

Looking Back:

Philly based Audible kicked things off with decent set, mainly focusing on their 2005 release Sky Signals (Polyvinyl Records).  What I heard was solid.  They certainly came across better live.  The definite highlight was the title track off of the album.  These guys (and girls) have potential.  If you like the slower Matt Pond PA songs, you'll enjoy Audible.

Next up was Mr. Charles Bissell of The Wrens.  I wasn't sure what to expect.  Was he going to play originals? or Wrens material? First off let me say It was him, a guitar and the 2005 accessory of choice, A Loop Pedal.  The set consisted mainly of a couple originals (one being a song he said he wrote a couple days ago.) an old Wrens song that is completely slipping my mind at the moment. (damn this memory). Throughout the set Charles showed off some impressive guitar skills and some damn good breakdowns.  However, Mr. Bissell saved the best for last. A cover of one of my favorite Sinead O'Connor songs "Black Boys On Mopeds"  off of her album I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got

side note: (I remember listen to this album when it came out because One: her Prince cover "Nothing Compares 2 U" and Two: I was in My dad's music collection... of which i would rummage and search for new things to listen)
This was the fix that I needed while I sit and wait for a follow up to the great Meadowlands.

First off let me say that I have been excited about this show since August when i found out about it.
The last two Okkervil shows I saw were extremely impressive, but nothing prepared me for this.  17 songs covering all but two of their releases (sleep and wake up songs & sham wedding/ hoax funeral)  Each song was played with the passion and urgency of an encore. One observation was that the packed, sold out crowd of the Khyber was moving, singing and bobbing just as much and if not more than the Wolf Parade crowd I witnessed a few weeks earlier.  Even though Will clearly stated they were worn out from the previous nights NY show, it didn't seem to show.  Okkervil's energy was amazing, building stronger and stronger with each song.

I feel like I am being a slight bit redundant... The show was one of the best shows I have ever seen. PERIOD. (and that is a bold statement).   If you can catch these guys on this last leg of the tour.... do it, you will not regret it.

So I will make a broad generalization... everyone likes some Bob Dylan. Right?  I will make another generalization and say that most like Uncle Tupelo.... (if you don't, just play along)  Combine the two and add a little Drive-By Truckers and you have The Murderers' Accordion.

This is one of those albums that took me off guard.  I figured it was going to be another "run of the mill", alt-countryish, band but i was wrong.  All of the aforementioned influences are extremely present on the album however So Little Left To See hits hard at the beginning and quickly worms it's way in to you brain with fun, knee slappin', dreamy, &  powerful, country tinged urgency.  Weird is definitely a stand out however one of my personal favorites has quickly become Eyes.  Eyes is the type of song that you love or hate....  It is so damn catchy that you hate it because you can't stop singing it or love it for that same reason.  Also the chorus maybe considered something off of HeeHAW! but it is great just the same.

For Real This Time...

I apologize for my week and a half long absence.  A brief note of explanation and then I'll get back to what I am here to do.  Went home to VA to visit. Quit one of two jobs (shady dealings, piece of shit boss... not the type of place i want to associate myself with. had about 100 cd's stolen from my car, luckily i had them ripped to my computer... but it isn't the same.... and there is more but i won't bore you.  After a hellish 2 weeks I think my life is getting back on track.
