Making Its Home In Your Radio

The Thing That is Making Its Home In Your Radio

For Real This Time...

I apologize for my week and a half long absence.  A brief note of explanation and then I'll get back to what I am here to do.  Went home to VA to visit. Quit one of two jobs (shady dealings, piece of shit boss... not the type of place i want to associate myself with. had about 100 cd's stolen from my car, luckily i had them ripped to my computer... but it isn't the same.... and there is more but i won't bore you.  After a hellish 2 weeks I think my life is getting back on track.

ON TO THE POST!!!

Wolf Parade in Philly

I've been so crazy busy the past 3 days i haven't even sat down to gather my thoughts and update.  Sunday night I made my way to Philly for the Wolf Parade show.  The "extremely hyped" and frequently blogged ablout band lived up to my every expectation. The new songs were excellent... two to be exact.  It was great to see them in such a small venue like the Khyber and to be so close to the stage... front right. the set list went accordingly

1. It's A Curse
2. Dear Sons and Daughters of Hungry Ghosts
3. We Built Another World
4. Throw Bones Away (new Spencer song)
5. You Are A Runner --> Fancy Claps
6. Secret Knives
7. Day in the Life
8. Shine A Light
9. I'll Believe in Anything

encore
1. New Spencer Song (w/lyrics "I Sing You in Songs")
2. Disco Sheets
3. This Heart's On Fire

So basically everything I was going to say about this show has already been posted over at Molars...
I will say Think About Life was not as good as he has posted.  Personally I though they were sloppy and trite.  I've seen crazy amount of college art rock band pick up a casio and do the same thing... I'd say they need a gimick but then i realized.... they do have the green under armor and the erradic dancing.

Also A favorite read of mine has posted a live version of one of the new Wolf Parade songs that is being played now on tour.

check it out over at Said The Gramophone

I was in need of a great show... and I certainly got one

Rogue Wave LIVE

I can't remember how long ago it was but I saw these guys open up for The Shins (remember them? according to their website they have been working on new material) and i was impressed, granted i was tippsy (a few to many pbr's) and a excited to see the Shins. RW's first album "Out Of the Shadows" got a few listens but got pushed aside. But now in 2005, Rogue Wave just released "Descended Like Vultures" are getting lots of hype and have certainly warranted more that a passing listen with their latest effort.  Here is Rouge Wave Live on KEXP during their in studios during CMJ.  Enjoy

October Mix Tape.

For about a year and a half I have been compiling my favorite songs from each month on to mix CD's.  It's become my personal monthly project.  The great thing about it is that i have some great music to listen to and also I can look back and see what I was listening to then. I know a lot of people do this and it is interesting to compare what others have compiled to what I have. One of the best examples of this it "BeatTheIndieDrum." Of course i come up with ridiculously artsy names and put them into volumes, burn them to cd's, put them into playlist on the ipod and work up covers from them.  It is one of those things that i look foward to each month... I guess you can say it gives me sanity.  Here is October's mix.  Enjoy!

Everything Is Illuminated & DeVotchKa

Everything_is_illuminated_poster_2Foxfront_1

Disclaimer: I have neither read nor seen "Everything Is Illuminated."

However I will write about what i do know.  I recently saw the trailer and it was a mildly good trailer until right near the end. BAM!!!!! IT gets amazing!  Why? Because of DeVotchka!!!..  About a minute fifty into the trailer i heard a faint violin and my ears perked up, and there it was, Devotchka! on a movie trailer, and not to mention one of my favorite songs and title track off of their 2004 release "How It Ends."   Of course i stopped paying attention to the trailer and began wondering why I don't here very much about this amazingly, awesome band.  I have heard a few people use the cliche line "they are some of the best music you have never heard" and that is true. If YOU do know about them and are hiding it.... Shout there praies and give them some ink.... they deserve it.  if you have not heard them well i'll give you the chance now! (or in a few lines)

DeVotchKa is from Dever and has released three studio, full lengths and one live album. Many say their music reminds them of Eastern European music fused with the best mariachi band. "Hava Nagilah" meets burlesque. But those descriptions don't even graze the surface. I'm deciding that You can be the judge!

Here are a few MP3's from DeVotchKa's website
2004's How It Ends
Such A Lovey Thing

2002's Una Volta
Death By Blonde

2002's Triple X Tango (LIVE)
Venus In Furs (Velvet Underground Cover)

2000's Supermelodrama
Dark Eyes

Wanna Find Out What The Hype Is All About.

Blueghost_deerhoof21_2

DEERHOOF!
I'm guessing it was about a year or two ago I found about Deerhoof through the XiuXiu messageboard.  I heard rave reviews as well avid "haters". I picked up a copy of 2003's Apple O' and was oddly intriged.  Deerhoof has been one of those bands i have enjoyed but never a band i would rush out and buy their new album the day it was released.. I did however get my hands on a copy of the newest album "The Runners Four". I gave it a once over and was excited to give it another spin. I repeated that a few times and Deerhoof has a way of worming their way into your brain.   I think that Satomi's vocals are awesome.  I have had a few "Joanna Newsome reactions" to her voice (you know the kind).  The blog community has gone crazy over the album as well as PFM giving them an impressive 9.0.

With that said I'll let you be the judge.
SiXEyes posted a link to stream "The Runners Four."

a slew of Deerhoof MP3's can be found here
http://music.ibiblio.org/pub/multimedia/puzzle/deerhoof/

also you can remix "Rrrrrrright" from "The Runners Four" and get it posted on the Deerhoof website.
